About Lorem Ipsum Generator

This tool runs entirely in your browser. Whatever you paste is processed on your own device and is never uploaded, logged, or sent to any server.

Lorem Ipsum is the scrambled Latin passage typesetters have used as placeholder text since the 1500s, and it is still the fastest way to see how a layout behaves before the real copy exists. This generator draws it fresh in your browser and lets you choose the shape as well as the size: whole paragraphs for article and blog templates, single sentences for headings and card summaries, an exact number of words when a field has a hard limit, or list items when you are filling a bulleted block. The result can be copied as plain prose, wrapped in HTML paragraph or list tags ready to paste into a template, or written as Markdown for a static site. A toggle keeps the familiar opening line, so anyone reviewing the page recognises the text as a placeholder at once.

Key features

  • Four units — paragraphs, sentences, words, and list items — so the output matches the slot you are filling
  • Any amount from 1 to 100 units, set with a slider or by typing an exact number
  • Short, medium, or long paragraphs, controlling how many sentences each one runs to
  • Plain text, HTML, or Markdown output, switchable without changing the text itself
  • HTML mode emits proper <p> paragraphs or a <ul> list with <li> items, syntax-highlighted in the output pane
  • Markdown mode writes blank-line-separated paragraphs and - bulleted list items
  • Optional canonical opening line, so the text is recognisable as a placeholder at a glance
  • Live word, character, sentence, and paragraph counts for checking against a field limit
  • One-click copy, plus download as .txt, .html, or .md
  • Runs entirely in your browser — no API call, no rate limit, and it keeps working offline

How to use it

  1. Choose what to generate: paragraphs, sentences, words, or list items.
  2. Set how many you need with the slider or the number box, and pick a paragraph length if you chose paragraphs.
  3. Pick the output format — plain text, HTML, or Markdown.
  4. Press Generate for a different passage, or leave the text as it is.
  5. Copy the result or download it as a .txt, .html, or .md file.

Tips & common mistakes

  • Switching the output format re-wraps the text you are already looking at rather than drawing a new passage. Changing the unit, the amount, or the paragraph length draws fresh text, as does the Generate button.
  • Real copy is rarely as even as Lorem Ipsum. If a design has to survive a one-word heading and a forty-word one, generate both extremes rather than trusting the medium setting.
  • Latin is deliberate. Placeholder text in your own language pulls reviewers into reading it, which is exactly the distraction the Latin avoids during a layout review.
  • The character count includes the markup in HTML and Markdown mode, because that is the string you paste. Switch to plain text if you are measuring against a field limit that only stores the prose.
  • Use the words unit when a field has a hard cap — a 20-word product summary or a 12-word card title — instead of generating a sentence and trimming it by hand.
  • Never ship it. Placeholder text that reaches production is a well-known embarrassment, and search engines index it like any other copy, so grep for "lorem" before a release.
  • List items are generated as single sentences, which is what a bulleted list normally holds. For multi-sentence bullets, generate paragraphs and paste them in as list content.
  • Everything runs locally from a fixed Latin word list, so it works on a plane or behind a strict firewall.

Choose whether you want paragraphs, sentences, words, or list items, set how many you need, and the placeholder text appears instantly. Press Generate for a different passage, then copy or download it.

It is scrambled Latin taken from Cicero’s "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum", written in 45 BC. A printer garbled the passage in the 1500s to make a type specimen, and the result has been the standard placeholder text ever since.

Because it is unreadable, it keeps reviewers looking at the layout rather than reading the copy. Placeholder text in your own language pulls attention into the words, which is the distraction a design review is trying to avoid.

Yes. Switch the output format to HTML and paragraphs come out as <p> elements, while list items come out as a <ul> with one <li> per item, ready to paste into a template.

Yes. Markdown mode separates paragraphs with a blank line and writes list items as - bullets, which is what a static site generator or a README expects.

Match the real content you expect. Three to five medium paragraphs is typical for an article template, one or two short ones for a card or a hero section. Generating far more than the final copy will hide layout problems rather than reveal them.

Yes. Choose the Words unit and set the count, and you get exactly that many words. It is the quickest way to fill a field with a hard limit, such as a 20-word summary or a 12-word card title.

The classic Lorem Ipsum vocabulary is only about 180 Latin words, so repetition is expected and is part of what makes the text recognisable. Longer passages naturally reuse words more often.

No. Search engines index placeholder text like any other copy, and it is a well-known embarrassment when it ships. Search your project for "lorem" before a release.

No. The text is drawn in your browser from a built-in word list, with no API call and no rate limit, so the tool keeps working offline.
